Brave New Voices “Rape Joke” (Video) @BraveNewVoices

I always say better late to the party then never making it at all. I stumbled onto this powerful group of poets a few weeks ago and shared their attempt to change the world one word at a time with their poem “Somewhere In America” when it premiered on the Queen Latifah show. While aimlessly surfing the web again this jewel “Rape Joke” popped up on my timeline and I had to do more than just watch the video and repost. I had to learn about the background of this organization and what they stand for. Brave New Voices / Youth Speaks is a conference once a year where young people come together to share their powerful commentary on life in poem form. The conference goes for about a week where they compete with their spoken word in front of hundreds of others.

BNV FESTIVAL 2015 Created by Youth Speaks after the inaugural Youth Speaks Youth Poetry Slam in San Francisco, BNV is the first youth-centric poetry slam in the nation’s history. Since that time, BNV has grown to represent youth from across the United States, Canada, Africa, the Polynesian Islands, and Europe, making it the largest and most diverse ongoing spoken word event in the world.

And now… this may very well be one of the best poems I’ve heard in a very long time, and is certainly on my top 5 list of favorite poems. They hit the nail right on the head when it comes to the culture we live in concerning rape.  Many are bashing this group, this poem and other things as “liberal propaganda” I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion and I most certainly do not agree. This is a major conversation starter that I hope will lead to positive change and understanding as opposed to the nonsense we are dealing with in this current culture.
