Red lipstick is my absolute all time favorite lipstick
and everyone around me knows it. So much so that this past Christmas I got three different shades of “red” lipstick for Christmas. (and I loved every single one of them) However once I got those lippies as gifts I decided to go into my lipstick pile and see which ones needed to be revived and which needed to be discarded. I’m a lipstick hoarder by the way (though I’m sure there are many that are way worse). What makes it really bad for me is I have over 30 lipsticks in which 1/3 I consider to be the same exact shade in person and when photographed. However whenever I’m in an Ulta, Sephora or beauty supply store I can’t help but fall in love with that shade all over again. It’s a vicious cycle! But that’s not why we’re here today! After sorting through my lippies I realized that some of my red shades just didn’t go so well with my brown skin. And thats what makes many women of color afraid to try beautiful bold reds, plums and wine colored lipsticks because we think it just doesn’t go with our complexion. We just have to find the right shades and lipliner (I’m a sucker for a good lip liner as well) and we’re all set! The perfect shade also doesn’t have to cost a student loan payment either. Below I share 12 red lipsticks for brown skin (or redish shades) that vary in price and hue but can still help you slay on a day to day. (PS: Most of these glamours lippies can be found in the TNT A-Store)
12 Red Lipsticks For Brown Skin
1. Wet N’ Wild Mega Last Lip Color- “Cherry Picking” 1.99
Semi Matte/Creme Finish
I love this lipstick one of my absolute faves and it does way more than expected for such a cheap price. I’m not usually a fan of pinks/fuschias but this is just deep enough to give you the puckered cute look without appearing ashy as most pinks do on a deeper/brown skin tone. And the color pops!
2. Wet N Wild Mega Last Lip Color “Vamp It Up”- 1.99
I’ve only dabbled with this dark a shade a few times, but Vamp it up is a creamy option that won’t run. The package says matte but I don’t get the matte finish at all. Makes me feel like the Joker when I wear it but sometimes I’m going for that look.
3. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream- “Amsterdam”- 4.99
Semi Matte finish
I love NYX’s soft matte lip cream line, and I was super excited to try this shade because it looked gorgeous in the container. Fast forward to a few tries, and it is a much brighter orange/red shade than I expected. I goes on smooth and once it dries gives you the matte look without being too drying. The shade is a bit off for me, but for a nice pop of color on brow tones it seves its purpose.
4. MAC “Ruby Woo”- 18.00
I would like everyone to meet BAE! I carry this around in my bag at all times in case of a lipstick emergency. This was my first experience with MAC and I’ve never stopped going back since. Ruby Woo is my absolute favorite Mac shad and my favorite red lipstick. It does go on a little drier than I’d usually like but the finished product is always stunning in person and in photos. This lipstick has the perfect purple/blue undertone to accentuate the beauty in brown skin.
5. Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Color “Very Cherry”- 7.00
This was one of my first red lipsticks and you can see it started me on my obsessive path. With the smooth satin finish you will get a bit of shine and tons of moisture. Some of it may end on your teeth or outside of the lip, but a great lip liner helps keep everything in place. It does however rub off very easily as most satin/cream lipsticks do. This is my favorite satin finish lippie because of the intense pop of color.
6. Wet N’ Wild Perfect Pair Lip Wand “Sensual Peach” – 1.99
I really can’t be too mad with this lipstick because of the price and the FINAL end result, but this lipstick I could do without. The lip liner breaks instantly with any amount of pressure you put on it, and the lipstick side goes on very thick like a silicone/vaseline based chopstick. It takes some work to smooth it out and apply evenly, but the color is cute once you get that situated.
7. Revlon Lustrous Creme Lipstick “Black Cherry”- 7.00
I used to love this lipstick in my younger days, but its a bit of a hassle to keep within the lines. It goes on smooth, but “melts” so adding a lip liner into the mix is a definite necessity. Other than that he color is just deep enough to be vampy without being too gothic.
8. Rimmel London by Kate Matte Finish- “102”– 8.00
I bought this lipstick at my local Walgreens on a whim because I liked the packaging and felt like adding yet another “red” to my collection. I used it once and forgot about it. After finding it again in my stash this weekend I’m falling back in love with it. It does apply a little rough as some matte lipsticks do. An easy quick solution to that is to us a moisturizing lip balm as your first layer for easier/ smoother application.
9. Burberry Lip Velvet Lipstick- “Damson” 34.00
This lipstick is going to be my new work lipstick as it is just the right shade of red/wine to be beautiful and not alarming or shocking in the work place. It is what I call the neutral of the red world. It fits beautifully with brown skin, and can be worn on daily basis to run errands.
10. Nars Satin Lip Pencil “Palais Royal”- 25.00
I used to really love this lip pencil, even though I bought it by complete accident. The pencil itself looks extremely dark so I was expecting a darker outcome, but even with several layers this satin finish stays a warm plum/wine color. It is a bit pricer than the others but it does last quite some time, even with my lipstick infatuation. What I love most about this unexpected purchase is that the color really does look great with pretty much all shades of brown.
11. Giorgio Armani Rouge Extasy “Diva” 36.00
This is the satin step sister to Mac’s Ruby Woo. The same beautiful purple/blue under tones are present in both, however the Armani lipstick goes on smooth. It is a bit more understated and pronounced than Ruby Woo but I attribute that to the difference in finish.
12. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream “Monte Carlo”- 5.00
This is the absolute best red lipstick I’ve ever had and I’ve got about 5 of them lined up at home in case I run out. This lip cream is matte, but is not drying and goes on with a wand applicator. It lasts ALL day even after eating and drinking. Can be used with or without a lip liner, and the price fits right into most budgets. I LOVE this red and wear it consistently when I want to be fleeky in my selfies! Highly recommended!
Trying on all of this lipstick was sooo tiring and messy! But I think I covered some ins and outs for you! Hard job but someone’s gotta do it! What is your favorite red? Did it make the list? If not share it with me below so I can add to my addiction !
