I know you wouldn’t believe me if I told you, but I didn’t start getting into makeup until the beginning of this year. I would dabble here and there with a tinted moisturizer, but nine times out of ten I’d throw on some lipstick and just go. This year I’ve been playing around with foundations, concealers, highlighters and more.
Besides simply playing around in makeup, I’ve been filming for Millennial In Debt every weekend since July. This means on a weekly basis, I’ve had to put on a full face of makeup for 5-8 hours a day. Add that to the environment and the weather, my skin started to be extremely pissed off with me.
No matter how natural the makeup is that you use, and how clean you keep your tools your skin is still spending hours hidden. This means you need to take a few extra steps and some extra care to make sure that your natural skin is still healthy and glowing.
I have sensitive combination skin, so it can become a nightmare when too many changes occur. In order to get my skin back on track I had to use a more acne fighting skin routine, that wouldn’t irritate my skin. This routine is ideal for women who enjoy makeup both frequently and on occasion. Best part about this routine it is sensitive skin friendly.
Acne Fighting Skin Care Routine For Makeup Lovers
1. Acne Fighting Cleanser: The first step to any effective skin care routine is the cleanser. The cleanser is the foundation of clear healthy skin. For my cleanser of choice I knew I had to use a product that incorporated some form of acne fighting ingredient that didn’t have other harsh ingredients that would dry out my skin. There is nothing worse than those patchy dry areas different parts of your face, while other areas have oil slicks. Oh the joys of having combination skin (rolls eyes).
I also didn’t want a gentle cleanser that was so gentle that it didn’t do the right amount of cleansing. As a make up lover you know that those make up wipes often leave makeup behind. So my cleanser needed to be gentle enough not to irritate my skin, strong enough to cleanse my skin, and effective enough to fight off acne. That is a tall order for one cleanser but the Clarisonic Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser did not disappoint. This cleanser left my skin feeling amazingly soft after rinsing it off. The Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser not only removed the makeup that my wipes left behind, but it also didn’t leave me feeling dry or irritated.
As someone who struggles with combination skin and acne from time to time I’m glad that the formula contains 2% Salicylic Acid for those pesky pimples. It also cotains Lipo Hydroxy to micro exfoliate the skin and remove dirt and debris. A little goes a long way FYI. Pouring just a tiny bit of the gel onto my Acne Brush Head created foamy cleansing goodness on my skin.
2.Use the Right Tools: When you’re skin is acting up particularly due to clogged pores, you’re going to need the right tools to tackle the issue. Your hands won’t always cut it. Instead I used my Clarisonic Mia to help me get back to the radiant skin I knew I had hiding under the madness. The Clarisonic Mia is gentle enough for me to use on my sensitive skin during my morning and night time skin cleansing ritual. The use of sonic cleansing (don’t confuse it with exfoliating guys… because it is not the same) cleanses the skin six times better than simply using your hands.
Four times a week I’d use the Radiance Brush Head in the morning and at night before bed to deliver my sonic cleansing experience. Three times a week I’d use the Acne brush at night before bed to deliver a stronger cleanse. The Acne brush is specifically designed to flush out and dislodge any dirt and debris that may be clogging your pores and causing acne. It gets right down the root of the problem that the makeup may be causing.
3.Focus on cleanliness: When using a good cleanser and the right tools you still could be taking one step forward and five steps backwards if you don’t focus on true cleanliness. Just like it is crucial and important to clean your makeup tools, you also want to use tools that are clean in order to clean your face. Duh! Sounds like common sense right?
You’d be surprised how many times I’ve tried to use different tools only to realize I wasn’t truly cleansing my face, simply moving the dirt around. Epic fail! However with my Clarisonic Mia the brushes are specifically designed with soft non porous materials that do not harbor bacteria while cleansing. You also wash your brushes once a week with soap and water (just like you would your make up brushes) and replace them every three months.
Sounds expensive? Well I honestly feel if you want great skin you have to take care of it and spending some coin on keeping my face radiant is worth it. However… Clarisonic and myself know that we are all on a budget. Clarisonic offers monthly payment plans upon credit approval for purchases. And HERcampus is giving my readers 15% off on all featured devices using code HERCAMPUS. You’re welcome guys!
4.Drink More Water: You knew I was coming to an end with healthier choices right? Whatever your water intake is now… you need to increase it. I recommend doubling it to be honest, because there is a good good good possibility that you are not drinking the right recommended amount of water anyway (am I right?). On average you want to fall between the 2-3 liter mark, and if you’re feeling especially ambitious head towards the gallon level. A healthy choice is to drink half of your body weight in water. Initially you’ll feel like you are peeing every five seconds, but your body is removing the impurities that you definitely don’t want just sitting in your system. Drinking more water will help clarify your skin and brighten your complexion. All this info is nothing new, but it is a gentle (or not so gentle) reminder that no matter how great your cleanser and routine is, without drinking enough water your skin will look dull and won’t look the way you want it to.
