Many times when we discuss health in general we focus on avoiding certain foods, and getting a flu shot…etc. But we don’t often consider the entire package that leads us to living a healthier life. Health is more than just avoiding a cold. You want to make sure that you are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to be on the right track to living a holistically healthier life. It’s a lifestyle that we all want but take shortcuts and avoid the best practices that will get us on the right track (myself included).
Why does this happen? Often times because we have a million and one things to get done in one day and lose sight of the greater good to make sure we meet all of our deadlines. But if we truly want to live a healthier life there are 3 simple things we need to focus on and remember!
3 Simple Steps To Living A Healthier Life
- Set a bed time and stick to it: I know I know… this is difficult for me to follow as well, but I find that once I start bending the rules it is hard for me to get back on track in every aspect of my day. A good nights sleep is the basis to having a successful day. It is the “reset” button, and helps you wake up feeling refreshed and thinking clearly. I find that even after my worst days a good night’s rest wakes me up with a whole new perspective the next day. Sleeping for a set amount of hours not only helps you physically perform better the next day, but also helps with mental and emotional interaction. I get super crabby when I don’t get at least 6-8 ours of sleep and I really do best at 7+. It may be difficult at first to put aside a time for you to sleep, especially when random life things can come up and make it nearly impossible. But the fact of the matter is that burning the midnight oil isn’t going to be beneficial to your health in the long run, and whatever it is that you are doing at 2:00am will also suffer due to your lack of focus, and awareness. Put the timer/alarm in your phone and abide by it! You will thank yourself later!
- Take Care Of Your Skin: I mean this in every sense of the word! Taking care of the largest organ you have should come as second nature but you’d be surprised at how much neglect we actually put our skin through. You should be drinking 2+ liters of water a day to help with proper regeneration and the moisturizing process. Using sunscreen is a given (duh) that you should do on a daily. I mean c’mon even makeup and lotion is coming with SPF in it already! Speaking of lotion… please please please moisturize your skin especially your face. Your older self will thank you. If you want to make sure your “skin don’t crack” then you need to treat it right. That also means using the right soaps, deodorants, shampoos (yes ladies your scalp counts as skin as well)…etc. Harsh chemicals can really strip your skin of its health so be careful with what you put on your body!
- Write Things Down: As I get older I find that I am not remembering things as much as I used to, especially because I have a million and one things going on. There’s no shame in writing your schedule down on a calendar or planner. In doing this you can make sure to schedule your annual check ups at the doctor, the dentist…etc (and yes you should be doing these regularly at this point). It’ll take less stress off of your mind and leave you with a sense of organization. Besides your schedule, I find writing down my thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams…etc really helps me put things in focus and gain a sense of peace. Bottling everything up really puts a strain on our emotional and mental health which in the long run will also start to weaken our physical health. It is all cyclical and one imbalanced aspect of life offsets the other. My favorite thing to write down: To Do Lists! Why? Because this way I can factor in meal planning, exercise, blog time, work time…etc and never miss a beat. Plus there’s no greater feeling in crossing things off of a physical list (some how erasing it in my iPhone notes doesn’t have the same satisfaction)
So there you have it, three simple steps for you to start taking in order to start living a healthier life. These steps won’t be easy and won’t automatically take you from 0-100 on the healthy life scale, but they will open the door way for you to walk in the right direction of achieving the healthier life you want and deserve!
