winter skin problems

New York just had a winter snow storm a few weeks ago, and it was pretty dreadful. We’ve also been historically facing some of the coldest temperatures during this frigid winter season. I say all of that to simply say this, I really really really hate the winter. It is my least favorite season for many reasons, and one of the main reasons is winter skin problems.

Four Common Winter Skin Problems & How To Fix Them

winter skin problems

1. Dry Skin: The number ONE culprit during the winter season is dry skin. Why? Because the winter air is particularly harsh on our skin (especially when its 9 degrees outside). I find that in the winter, I often have to re-moisturize my skin throughout the day because the moisturizers I’ve been using in the spring, summer and fall no longer cut it.

Besides that, I also am one of the unfortunate thousands of people who suffer with eczema. Everyone will say well the best way to get rid of dry skin is obviously to use moisturizer but all moisturizers are not created equally. The winter calls for moisturizers that can seal in the sebum, which naturally lubricates your skin. To battle the tough dryness that occurs during the winter you need to be methodical in your moisturizer choice and usage.

For my legs and arms, I was able to find a moisturizer that would go on thick. I would then simply add coconut oil to the mix and voila I’d be rid of dry skin for a while.

The skin on my face however needed a different method. I still did need a thick moisturizer, but I needed it to also be light enough to avoid clogging my pores. So adding in coconut oil was absolutely OUT of the question.

The new moisturizing line Olay Whips, gets the duality of the job done in one clean application. It is extremely easy to find at your local Walgreens which means it is convenient to my hectic millennial frenzied life.  It provides your skin with Vitamin B3, Pro Vitamin B5, and Green Tea. And with the active rush technology, the moisturizer goes from cream to liquid, so you get immediate absorption into the skin (no greasy sticky residue left behind).

After cleansing my sensitive combination skin, I used my toner, and then applied the Olay Luminous Whip to seal the deal. Talk about moisture and radiance in one package. (SIDE NOTE: I used the Olay Luminous Whip as my moisturizing primer before my makeup application and I was SHOOK! More on that later)

2. Chapped Skin: Your lips are NOT the only thing that can get chapped during the winter. You chin, forehead, smile lines and most often cheeks can often fall victim to harsh winter conditions. Chapped skin is not only annoying, it is extremely painful. If you spend too much time outside in the cold (like when you have to dig your car out of 8 inches of snow… sigh) your skin will start to chap due to a combination of dehydration, wind burn and sun exposure. It is probably one of the worst things to occur to your skin, and you are more susceptible to it during… yup you guessed it THE WINTER!

How do you get rid of chapped skin? Well your best bet is to keep the chapped skin out of the harsh conditions for a while as it heals (think scarves and face masks only exposing your eyes). The even better bet is prevention. Don’t go out barefaced. I use my Olay Luminous Whip in the morning before I head out, and in the night time before bed. This moisturizer is powerful and light enough to be used as both your day and nighttime moisturizer. The moisturizer is hydrating enough to help tackle one of the main causes of chapped skin: dehydration.

3. Oily Skin: Now as much as dry skin can be a major pain during the winter months, oily skin is another winter skin problem that can become an even bigger nuisance. Here is what happens: during the winter using “clarifying” products will strip away the natural oils from our skin, and our glands will start to over produce oil to compensate for the oils we’re stripping away. If you are already prone to oily skin, this can really be a nightmare in the fall and the winter in particular.

The solution to this is to use gentle hydrating products that keep your skin balanced, instead of removing oil from your face. When you head to your local drug store of choice (mine is Walgreens) you can find various Olay Whips choices. I chose the Olay Luminous Whip because of my sensitive combination skin. Olay Luminous Whip handles both the dry parts and the oily parts with ease.

The light air finish gives you a smooth matte finish when applied, and doesn’t bog down your pores with a gunky greasy mess. I always want to look like I’m glowing from within, even when I don’t have an ounce of make up on. The Olay Luminous Whip keeps my dry skin moisturized, and provides just the right amount of moisture to my oily skin areas without having me look like a grease ball.

4. Dehydrated Skin: You’ve seen all those posts on Insta about how to get clear skin. And they always end with drink lots right? Well yes … drinking water is definitely a major key to success when you are trying to up your skin health, but it is not the only step that must be taken.

In the winter our skin gets tired and dehydrated. But aren’t dry and dehydrated the same thing? Not necessarily. Dehydrated skin can feel either extremely tight, to the point where it feels like it is going to crack when moved, or it can be extremely greasy. And when you want/or try to apply make up on skin that is dehydrated you will never get the great application that you deserve.

Drinking water is helpful, but you also need to sop and start doing other things. The first thing to do is to stop using harsh cleaners and exfoliators as much as you would during warmer temperatures. You need products that are going to back a hydrating punch when applied to your skin. That means all the way from the cleansing step, to the moisturizing step you need to be using moisturizing and hydrating products.

Olay Luminous Whip keeps me radiant (with or without makeup) without being shiny. That can be the downfall or trade off when you use tons of moisturizing products. You look greasy and oily… (you know like when mom used to rub Vaseline all over your face as a kid before heading out). Your face will feel breathable and light, even though you are covered with a healthy dose of moisture.

There you have it lovelies. The four pesky winter problems I often face (and you probably do too) and how to fix them. The Olay Luminous Whip is a new staple product in my face care regimen that I am absolutely in love with (and will be using year-round not just in the winter). You can find it at your local Walgreens or online. Best part… it’s conveniently available and affordable. Save your coins and your skin in one step! ‘Til the next time!

PS: Can you tell I was a totally obsessed with this lip color! Sorry for all of the duck faces .. I just couldn’t help it!
