It is summer my absolute favorite season! But with great fun comes great responsibility. We’ve been waiting all year for summer (well I have) and now we before diving into the pool, or heading to the beach we need to ensure that our tresses are protected from the harsh summer sun. Without adding too much time and effort to your hair care regimen I’ve crafted up the best way to protect your natural hair form sun damage without being a damper on your summer time shenanigans. So without further adieu let us get to it!

How To Protect Your Natural Hair From Sun Damage

1. Hair Accessories: I’m always a fan of hair accessories particularly head wraps. You can throw on a quick baseball cap (dad hat if you’re trying to be trend) or jazz it up with a fedora or beach hat. Whatever your choice of accessory is make sure that it isn’t going to do more damage than good. Remember don’t use cotton based hair accessories so you don’t cause damage/friction and breakage. Instead use satin/silk based accessories instead.

2. Sun Protectant Products: During the summer you want to pay close attention to the products you are adding to your hair. Well actually you want to pay attention year round… but in the summer there are certain things you should be looking for. For starters you want to avoid peroxide, alcohol and lemon based products. Though I recommend staying away form these ingredients year round, particularly in the summer these ingredients can do major damage to the hair.

Instead you want to find products that have Vitamin E. You also want to find a product with UVA absorbers such as Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, or Dibenzoyl methanes. I know these ingredients can sound a bit crazy and may be even harder to remember when walking down the aisles of beauty supply stores. You can look for products that distinctly state they offer sun protection such as the Ouidad Sun Shield Sun & Sport Leave In Spray

3. Moisture: Though you should be adding moisture to your hair frequently it is extremely important to do so during the summer. You’re battling the atmosphere and it can get mighty difficult in 90 degree weather. Especially if you live in an area with dry air. Use the L.O.C method 2-3 times a week to add and retain moisture to your hair.

4. Protective Style: The best solution to protect your hair from the sun in the summer is to protective style. Wearing buns, twists, braids, and other protective styles will help lessen the stress that the environment can cause on your hair. This will also help with increasing retention as you will be doing less manipulation and styling with your hair tucked away.
